pupan
a bus stop in Akureyri, Iceland
Pupan, translated to cocoon in icelandic, is a bus stop designed for Habitacola - a urban design competition held in Barcelona. Me and my partner Melkorka Yrrsudottir were asked to pick a location and develop a shelter for public transportation that accommodates the current issues found at the location. We chose Akureyri, a small town in Iceland, as a location for this project.

current state
Today, Akureyri features traditional bus shelters. These are typically single poles that contain simple bus route information. This design is unwelcoming for habitants of Akureyri, lacking in both an aesthetically pleasing design as well as protection from harsh weather conditions.

solution
In a location where cars are the primary mode of transportation, our bus stop seeks to change the current norm by providing a reliable and convenient alternative. In the center of Akureyri, our bus stop is a symbol of comfort, sustainability, and security for both locals traveling to work and visitors enjoying the views of Iceland while being protected from the weather.

cocooned comfort
The idea is that each individual traveler will have their own cocoon that can be rotated in order to achieve ultimate protection from wind, rain and snow.

drift wood panels
Driftwood washes onto shores, including those of Iceland. The wood is weathered, smooth, bleached and salted from the sea. The salt preserves and stabilizes the wood - enhancing durability and prevents swelling of the wood. Using driftwood promotes sustainability by repurposing natural materials.
